WALES'S ENERGY INDEPENDENCE

Posted by Jeff Rees on November 22, 2007 9:45 AM |

The Danish energy authority is responsible of the planning of the supply of electricity, natural-gas and heat. Besides, it is responsible of renewable energy, for example the planning of off-shore windfarms and the use of bio-mass.
The authority seeks to ensure an economically optimal energy-supply system that gives a high degree of security of supply while following the objectives of high efficiency, high level of environmental protection and a system based on different sources of energy - at a reasonable cost.

Security of supply in Wales means that the British decide to build a single wood chip burning elecricity plant to supply half of the electricity needed by homes in Wales. This is not security of supply - concentrating electricity supply in a single wood chip burning electricity plant with the raw material coming on a boat from outside Wales is a strategic error. Far better for Wales's energy needs to be supplied from a mix of energy sources and locations in Wales in case something goes wrong with one of them or the supply of the sources of energy is threatened. Powers over all energy matters must be transferred to the Senedd.

A Welsh Government should be working to ensure that 100% of Welsh Energy needs are met not 5% of British needs.
