007 AND INDEPENDENCE

Posted by Jeff Rees on August 14, 2007 3:25 PM |

My politics come from a simple belief: that my country, Scotland, should have equal status with the nearly 200 other independent countries around the world. Independence is a concept that Americans inherently understand. After all, the sentiments for freedom in the Declaration of Independence echo those from the Declaration of Arbroath that Scots penned in the 14th century. (We said nothing about the pursuit of happiness, however, a fantastically American addition.)

Some Welsh coverage in the Washington Post would be nice also.

A National Conversation on Scotland's constitutional future was launched today alongside the publication of a paper outlining different options for public debate and proposals for a referendum. First Minister Alex Salmond said the Conversation was based on the premise that the people of Scotland are sovereign and should decide on the way they are governed. Choosing Scotland's Future examines the principal options for constitutional change and addresses the arguments for and against each. The Scottish Government believes the principal choices are:
Small extension of devolved powers
Radical redesign of devolution and greatly enhanced powers
Independence

It is vital for Wales to debate it's constitutional future recognising the benefits and opportunities independence brings.
