Manifesto for a healthier Wales

Posted by Jeff Rees on February 27, 2007 1:48 PM |

By 2008 all public workplaces are to create an official dietary policy for their employees. Christensen believes a ban on giving children sugar at schools could be made a part of such local regulations.

We still cannot legislate in Wales to protect the health of our children as other small nations do.The Danes would not let the British neglect the health of Danish children we shouldn't either.

The Welsh diet has long been implicated in our poor health record. It continues to be too high in fat, salt and sugars and too low in fruit and vegetables. Our eating habits and low levels of physical activity are leading to increasing rates of obesity. More than half of Welsh adults are now overweight or obese. Healthy food must be affordable, accessible and appetising. We need to educate Welsh people, particularly the young, on the benefits of a healthy diet in preventing obesity, diabetes and cancer.

In Wales, I am afraid, the health of the children is not protected. Often I find the little ones with their parents on the street either too fat (obesity)or on the other hand very pale or grey without any muscles.

The pale colour is a sign that they do not go out and play so much as they used to in Wales or as they do in other countries and a lack in vitamines. Also, the bad weather!

In Wales, you see many young people and old with very bad teeth. Drinking squash is not healthy. On the continent the children and adults often mix half a glass of orange juice with mineral water. It is delicious! These drinks are called Schorle.

Good drinks are cheaper in other countries, good food is cheaper. In Wales, they mainly sell full fat cheeses (again very little choice). As a tourist you might go to the Royal Welsh Show and see all the wonderful Welsh local produce & I must say all the farmers do a fantastic job, I really admire what they do.

But: open a fridge in a Welsh household (not many products they advertise in the Royal Welsh show in it!! Who can afford them if other bills are so high??) - not ALL, of course. But some: It can be a shock! Maybe you find some Cheddar, a little bit of ham, mayonnaise for salads (yuck!), margarine. I noticed there is not much choice of yoghurts here even at Tesco's or Morrissons when you look at supermarkets abroad. The list is long!

You should have a look inside a RIMI supermarket in Latvia!! The choice is fantastic!!

A ban - as suggested is never a good idea. The children would still eat it. Whatever you ban is more attractive but there should be a bigger choice of foods in Wales and not so much tax on products here. PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN REHABILITATION!!!! It would save the government a lot of money in the long-term.
